ADRIAN JAVIER

During adolescence, everyone experiences development on all the aspects of their life. Their physical, psychological, cognitive, and spiritual states are all changing during this time, which is needed for the whole person to be fully developed once they reach the end of adolescence. All these aspects developing concurrently with each other can be called as holistic development. Let me share with you how I am experiencing these changes during my adolescence.

Starting with the simplest one, physical development. Physical development during the adolescence stage is very present. Hair growth all over the body, acne, changes in voice, the growth of the whole body and its different parts, these are all normal changes when going through this stage. But one thing that stood out is my weight. Before adolescence, I was obese but when puberty started, my weight started changing rapidly and now I am a lot skinnier. This has led to people close to me talking about my weight and asking what’s happening to my health which has pressured me ‘til now. This weight development has made me be self-conscious and insecure about my body, but these challenges will slowly go away while I develop my psychology.

Next is cognitive development. This development improves the critical thinking of a person; therefore, it can interact with physiological and social development. My skills in processing of information, problem solving, and decision-making has become better and more complicated since individuality is introduced and experienced, challenges in life makes a big contribution to this.

Psychological development is the biggest challenge in adolescence. It involves the changes in relationships, mental health, emotions, and feelings. The development of this aspect of life in the early stages of adolescence is mainly focused on accepting and comprehending myself since my body has undergone massive changes rapidly due to puberty. After this stage, individuality and independence has been a trend. Although I have become farther to my parents and other family members because of this. I would do more risky things now than ever since I am more curious and experimental now. Having this behavior lead me to affect other’s lives or my life badly, so I decided to self-assess myself more, which led to the same behavior but not destructive.

My experience in adolescence is focused more on individuality and independence (for me at least), so regarding my development socially, I became closer to my friends more than my family. I seek more support from them than my family except for financial support, this has led to me being more vulnerable to peer pressure from my friends.
